The day had finally arrived. Members of the crew had been training extremely hard for the past few months and today those efforts would be put to the test. I briefly met up with girls from the Manchester chapter of the WMNRUN project to shoot some content with them a few months back at the end of last year and hadn't realised just how quickly the time had passed.
Two years ago there was only one member of the crew participating, and a couple of the lads cheered from the sidelines as that one solitary member ran past, so they then continued to support the rest of the runners competing. Last year 5 of the crew entered and successfully crossed the line, and our cheer squad grew to maybe 15 with the addition of a megaphone. This year the numbers were larger than ever. With the addition of members from Run Dem and the WMNRUN initiative set up by Still Waters founder and long distance badgyal Sorrell Walsh I think it must have pushed to almost 40 competing, with similar numbers scattered along the sidelines, confetti cannons in hand and voices cranked up to 11.
We set ourselves up at Mile 21, a standard position traditionally set by Run Dem to create a wave of support to help propel runners through the final 5ish miles to the finish line. Feedback from last year was very positive from independent runners who appreciated the support, and I hope we helped a lot more people finish on a high this time around.
The rest of the piece is VERY image heavy to ensure I captured as many familiar smiling faces as possible, so hopefully I managed to pick you out of the crowd! Unfortunately due to timings on the day we only made to get to the point as the 3:30 pacer passed by, so if you were faster than that, unfortunately you were going too ruddy fast for me to grab a photo! We're all really proud of everyone in the group that has put the work in throughout the year to get to this point, especially those who PB'd against their previous marathon records. Extremely inspiring and it's certainly got a lot of people interested in tackling the distance at some point.
